Youngstown State University’s Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) student organization won first place in the Northeast Ohio HR Case Competition, held at Baldwin Wallace University this March.
SHRM chapter president Paige Rassega and chapter treasurer Carisa Sechrist participated for the YSU team and now qualify to compete in the central division competition.
Rassega, a human resource management major, is a senior from Mineral Ridge and has accepted a position at Brilex Group of Companies in Youngstown upon graduation in May. Sechrist is a junior business administration major from Boardman.
Thomas Rakestraw and Denise Carissimo, both faculty in the Management Department at YSU, helped the team prepare for the competition, which involved teams delivering a 20-minute presentation on a human resources case study. Each team received the study one week prior to the competition in order to prepare and then presented to a panel of judges who engaged participants in a question-and-answer session following the presentation.
Teams were scored based on how successfully they defined the major problems and cause of the problems of the case, and whether or not they presented alternatives. Scores also reflected delivery and how well participants answered the judge’s questions.
Rassega and Sechrist head to Covington, Ky., on April 24 next for the 2015 SHRM Central Division HR Case Competition.
