YSU’s Model United Nations Team captured second place in the 2014 Lake Erie Model U.N. and eight team members took home individual awards, competing with students from across the Great Lakes region.
Two Foreign Affairs majors, Abby Kovacs, a sophomore from Jefferson, Ohio, and Jeffrey Bash, a junior from Salem, won Superior awards, the highest recognition available.
Senior Chelsea Stafford, a Criminal Justice major from Youngstown, and sophomore Economics major Thomas D. Metheney of Medina won Excellent awards for their participation in the UN High Commission on Refugees representing China.
Freshman Jenna DeLaurentis of Poland and junior Jonathon Beese of Uniontown, Ohio, both Political Science majors, took home Excellent awards for their participation in the Commission on Status of Women, representing Ireland.
Emily Wire, a sophomore Foreign Affairs major from Youngstown, and Amanda Hovanec, a high school student from Vienna attending YSU, were awarded the Under Secretary General’s Gavel for their participation in the African Union representing Kenya.
The team, coached by David Porter, professor, Politics and International Affairs, participated in the three-day event in Cleveland in November.
