A dozen Youngstown State University students and a dozen regional nonprofit and public sector organizations have been selected to participate in the 2013 Nonprofit Leadership Summer Honors Internship Program, funded by the Raymond John Wean Foundation.
The students, both undergraduate and graduate students, represent 10 majors and degree programs from across campus.
The YSU Center for Nonprofit Leadership runs the internship program, providing an opportunity to build capacity at regional nonprofit organizations while providing career-related experience to undergraduate and/or graduate students. The program addresses the Mahoning Valley’s need for succession planning within the nonprofit and public employment sectors and the challenge of “brain drain” in the Mahoning Valley. Students in the program are prime candidates to be developed as the future leaders of regional nonprofit organizations and public sector offices.
The Nonprofit Leadership Summer Honors Internship Program is a full-time (40 hours per week), 12-week internship program designed to provide 12 qualified students with career-related work experience in a nonprofit or public sector organization. The program runs from Monday, May 20, 2013 to Friday, Aug. 9. All students participating in the program have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA, are of at least senior standing, and have a declared major.

- Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley has selected Olivia Conner, MBA, to be its Marketing/Special Events/Development Intern.
- Humility of Mary Health Partners Foundation has selected Emily Bosela, BSBA-Marketing, to be its Marketing/Special Events/Development Intern.
- Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities has selected Sayantoni Dey, MBA, to be its Human Resources Intern.
- Mahoning County Land Reutilization Corporation/Land Bank has selected Craig Rader, MA-American Studies, to be its Program Intern.
- Mahoning Valley Historical Society has selected Ronald Markowitz, MS-Student Affairs, to be its Education Program Intern.
- Mill Creek MetroParks has selected John Dysert, MA-American Studies, to be its Park Administration Intern.
- OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology has selected Courtney Waskin, BSBA/General Business Administration, to be its Marketing/Development/Volunteer Management Intern.
- Salem Community Hospital has selected Deanna Hardy, BSBA-Human Resource Management, to be its Volunteer Management Intern.
- Trumbull County Engineer has selected Eric Hippley, BS-Civil and Construction Engineering Technology, to be its Engineering Intern.
- Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership has selected Samuel Addai, MS-Applied Math & Computer Science, to be its Program Intern.
- Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation has selected Eric Shehadi, BS-Mathematics, to be its Community Development/Urban Planning Intern.
- Youngstown Area Jewish Federation has selected Ryan Mills, BSBA-Finance, to be its Financial Management/Accounting Intern.
Twenty-five nonprofit and public sector organizations and more than 50 students applied to participate in the program this year.
This project continues to engage YSU business majors and nonprofit leadership students in professional development opportunities with the nonprofit community, fulfilling the mission of the Williamson College of Business Administration to prepare undergraduate and graduate students for productive and fulfilling careers as leaders in business, government, nonprofit organizations and society.
The Center for Nonprofit Leadership offers a certificate and a minor in Nonprofit Management and Leadership, which can be combined with any major on campus.
